Garden Classes

Gardening is a practical skill. It needs to be learnt hands on. Our gardening classes will give you the benefit of Chris’ years of gardening success and experimentation.  With only 4-6 participants in each class, you will learn with your hands not just your eyes and ears.


Activities covered

  • How to pick the best spot to locate your garden beds (discussion)
  • Raised beds, why? pros and cons, varieties and budgets. (discussion)
  • Prepare ground for planting (hands on)
  • Ergonomics in the garden,  (hands on)
  • Gardening tools, test and compare examples of  hoes,  forks, weed removers, ergonomic shovels, and   ( hands on)
  • Understand and work with soil ecology (discussion)
  • PH testing (hands on)
  • Improving soil structure and fertility (hands on)
  • Watering systems (discussion)
  • Manage weeds by understanding their life cycle and needs (hands on)
  • Mulching  when, which type and how thick (hands on)
  • Root crop sowing, minimise thinning and increase germination rate (demo)
  • basics of intercropping and cash cropping techniques (hands on)
  • Crop rotation (discussion)
  • Pest control using  barriers and biological allies (disscussion)

Class size, duration, cost and location
Class size is  4 to 6 people (aged 17+)
Class duration is 2.5 hours
Each class is $50 per person
Kingston Community Garden 12-14 Gormley Drive, Kingston.


Booking  methods
To reserve yourself a spot on a particular weekend please pay buy one of the three options below.
  1. Cash, paid in full at the time of booking at the farmgate market Sunday mornings
  2. Deposit into my account bank account   hobart kitchen gardens BSB 484 799 A/C  202869624 tagged with your first and last name, followed by an email to hobartkitchengardens@gmail.com to inform me that you have deposited monies and for which day. I will confirm your booking by email within 48 hours of receiving your email. 
  3. Cash, paid in full at my home address 134 Albert Rd Moonah. By appointment only, via Phone 0400085860 (Chris) or email hobartkitchengardens@gmail.com 
Cancellations will only be refunded if notice is given by text message or email to 0400085860 before 5pm the Thursday prior to your booked class. Funds will refunded if the class is cancelled by myself.
A 3m x 6m marquee is placed over garden bed area for the duration of class depending on weather to avoid cancellations due to rain.





The Teacher
Chris Chamley has 13 years of experience growing food in his back yard. As a true lazy gardener, he has learnt how to garden with minimal effort.  Chris believes that growing our own food should be fun and easy.  Chris has run 2 successful vegetable gardening businesses Y2K Gardens in Queensland and now Hobart Kitchen Gardens. He has also designed, installed and run a school garden including teaching for 2 days a week.
